Overview

Dr Lucy Bradnock joined The Courtauld in 2022, having previously worked at the University of Nottingham (2012-22) and as a Research Fellow at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles (2009-2012).

Lucy is a specialist in modern and contemporary art in the United States, with a particular focus on histories of art in California and the American West; alternative sites of artistic production, display, and dissemination; Beat and counterculture; and the intersection of art and radical theatre practice.

Lucy’s publications include No More Masterpieces: Modern Art After Artaud (Yale University Press, 2021), Lawrence Alloway: Critic and Curator (edited with Courtney J. Martin and Rebecca Peabody, Getty, 2015), and Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles Art, 1945-1980 (edited with Rebecca Peabody, Andrew Perchuk, Glen Philips, and Rani Singh, Getty, 2011). Her writing is included in exhibition catalogues produced by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, ICA Boston, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and Copenhagen Contemporary, and in art history journals including Art HistoryArt JournalOxford Art Journal, the Getty Research Journal, and the Journal of the Archives of American Art.

Lucy is Editor of the journal Art History, and from 2011-12 was Managing Editor of the Getty Research Journal. She previously served on the Advisory Board of the Terra Foundation-Tate Research Project ‘Refiguring American Art 1945-1980’.
