Abstract
In 2003 a gilt-bronze roundel of Mars, Venus and Vulcan came to light in a private collection in England. Its attribution to Gian Marco Cavalli provides a new basis for understanding this elusive figure, whose work for the Gonzaga court in Mantua included commissions from Isabella d’Este. It is argued here that the roundel may have been made for her studiolo c.1500.
