A survey of Marxist thinking on art for the three volume Routledge Companion to Marxism, written with Gail Day and the late Marina Vishmidt. The essay begins with 'fragments of an impossible history' and then explores three key themes: commodity/value; economic subjects/labour; and social reproduction.
