Abstract
On the basis of a wealth of new archival documentaiton, this article unravel the legal dispute concerning the inheritance of the main branch of the Medici Family from the end of its direct lineage at the death of Duke Alessandro in 1537 until the reign of Granduke Ferdinando, fifty years later. It shows how the dispute, which opposed Cosimo de' Medici, Caterina de' Medici and Margaret of Austria was embroiled in the politics of FLorence, France and the Empire and how Cosimo never managed to obtain direct control over the estate of the main line of the family.
