Abstract
The effigy on the Black Prince’s tomb in Canterbury Cathedral was unprecedented in English medieval funerary art in being an armoured figure cast in metal. Recent technical analysis offers new evidence for understanding how the gilt-copper alloy effigy was made and suggests workshop links to royal tombs in Westminster Abbey, providing evidence that the tomb was constructed in the mid 1380s on the initiative of Richard II.
