Gabriele Münter, Looking Awry: Lost Subjectivities of the Colonial Modern

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The essay explores Gabriele Münter's painting and photography practice in relation to colonial modernism, in particular, her photographs of a 'Völkerschau' in Munich in 1901, her photgraphs in Tunisia from 1905 and her paintings in Paris in 1930. It offers a completely new perspective on Münter's practice as an artist, one which attends to entanglements of race, colonialism, and privilege in Imperial Germany. [7,185 words]
