Abstract
An exhibition catalogue essay for the Guggenheim New York exhibition titled 'Gabriele Münter: Contours of a World' opening in November 2025. The essay explores Münter's position as a white woman artist in Imperial Germany and thinks about how her work was shaped by her experiences of colonial modernism, focusing on a small selection of her paintings made in Paris in 1930 and her photographs taken at an ethnographic display of people from India, in Munich in 1901.
