Abstract
This article stems from a paper originally presented at the conference 'Guernica: Pervivencia de un mito', 18-19 November 2021 (Museo Picasso, Malaga). Taking the text-like but inherently illegible markings inscribed on the horse in Guernica as a starting point, it examines the interplay between text and texture, textuality and context in Guernica. Where text eludes definitive meaning, Picasso is able to use what Barthes called allusive writing to create imagery that becomes infinitely translatable, re-useable and re-readable.
