Abstract

This special issue of Art History will be edited by Sonia Boyce and Dorothy Price and will look at specific works of art by artists of African and Asian descent, paying particular attention to how those works speak to modernism. The starting point of the editorial framework considers Stuart Hall's essay 'Black Diaspora Artists in Britain: Three 'Moments' in Post-war History, in an address the mid-20th century promise of a libertarian international dialogue on modernism and what happened to that promise . In the wake of a challenge to high modernism's claims for autonomy of the object, a second consideration will look at diaspora practices that emerged in the 1980s and beyond.
