Abstract
This article reassesses the authorship and meaning of the panel of the Martyrdom of St Denis in the Louvre, arguing that it was begun by Johan Maelwael in 1398 and completed by Henri Bellechose in 1416, and that its conception, imagery and purpose was closely related to the disastrous defeat of the Burgundian-led armies at Nicopolis in September 1396, and its completion to the battle of Agincourt of 1415.
